The Platte Canyon Area Chamber of Commerce needs volunteers for its car show in downtown Bailey on May 12 and Bailey Day on June 16, said chamber board member and Vice President Jerry Humphrey at the chamber’s breakfast meeting on Jan. 10.

In addition, he said, sponsors are needed for the car show. Sponsorships range from $25 to $100. The car show will be on Main Street.

“We’ve already gotten the go-ahead from the county commissioners, and they’ve waived the fee,” said Humphrey.

Chamber President Marcel Flukiger said he wanted to get started earlier on organizing Bailey Day this year so there is “not as much run- fling around at the end.” He stressed that Bailey Day needs to have more things to do for children, particularly in the context of families of bicycle riders participating in the Bailey Hundo, the 100-mile mountain bike race that will start and end in the Bailey area on the same day, June 16.

There will be 250 riders planned for the Bailey Hundo again this year, the same as last year. “The Forest Service capped us at 250 riders again this year,” said Michelle Abbott, treasurer of the chamber.

John Gerritsen, acting president of the board for the Bailey Hundo, said that the U.S. Forest. Service wanted to see some issues addressed, and if they are addressed to the Forest Service’s satisfaction, he is hopeful that the number of riders will be increased from 250 to a higher number in the 2013 Bailey Hundo.

“There were some issues that the Forest Service wanted to see improved, such as course marking,” said Gerritsen. In addition, the Forest Service wanted to see better notification of other users of the trails and road used by the Hundo so those other users would not be surprised by the event.

“We will need more volunteers to do this,” Gerritsen said. In addition, the Hundo will be spending more money on sandwich boards and other means of communication.
Flukiger noted that a silent auction to raise money for scholarships for Platte Canyon High School students is scheduled for Sunday, March 18.

He also said the chamber is looking at putting on its website something about the availability and low cost of leasing commercial space in the Bailey area. It’s “pretty attractive to get something to lease in Bailey,” he said.

Flukiger also talked about moving the information kiosk in Delwood Square to downtown Bailey.

Doug Stephens, secretary of the Park County Historical Society, reminded chamber members that the group will be hosting a dinner and history presentation on Saturday, Jan. 14, from 5-7 p.m. at the Platte Canyon Community Center at Shawnee.

It will feature a presentation by Rex Rideout, who plays various instruments and will be re-enacting history. He performed in the movie “Cowboys and Aliens.” For more information, call 303-838- 6025.

In addition, chamber members discussed the second annual home-based business mixer, which will be Jan. 26 from 5-7 p.m. at Conifer Community Park at Beaver Ranch, 11369 South Foxton Road in Conifer. It is organized by the Conifer Area Chamber of Commerce and certified public accountant Franie Bassett, and admission is $5 for Conifer chamber members and $10 for non-members.
