Author's Preface
This research paper is directed toward all the collectors, dealers and hobbyists who enjoy fairy lights. We sincerely hope that every collector/reader will discover something new and interesting about fairy lights. The decision was made to assemble this research paper because of the renewed interest in Fenton fairy lights and increased demand for more information among the interested collectors.
Introduction
Most serious collectors, whether they start out that way or not, are students of history. We are wise enough to authenticate our collections and compile records of our findings. By doing so, many serious collectors become an "authority" and are often called upon by their counterparts to share their information. This "research" is by no means complete, it is however as correct as possible. Any corrections, additions or comments are welcome and wanted! Please attempt to confirm all data with hard evidence, such as photocopies of publications, photo's of fairy lights, etc.
Fairy lamps are not new, however publications written about them seem to be very uncommon. And yet fairy lamps are considered by many a valuable collectible, high in popularity and very sought after in the collectibles market. Our research indicates that these candle-burning lamps rate among the "scarce" collectibles. Could it be that due to the very nature of their usage, numerous fairy lamps were shattered due to heat generated from the burning candles?
By nature every collector wants to know: what is it, who made it, how old is it, by what distinguishing facts or other means can reliable recognition be made, is it being reproduced, how is the copy different from the original, and of course, "What is it worth?" We will endeavor to answer each of these appropriate questions as they relate to fairy lamps in general and Fenton products specifically.
Origin of Fairy Lamps
The last year or two has witnessed a renewed interest in "fairy lamps" as a significant collectible. Their rise in popularity is not surprising to many Fenton collectors. A simple definition of a fairy lamps is a lamp that uses a candle, not oil, (with a few exceptions) for illumination. When illuminated, the lamps satiny blush and brilliant colors captivate collectors, dealers and laymen alike.
Fairy lamps are an product of the Victorian period - 1840's to 1905. It was during the early years that fairy lamps, generally deemed old-fashioned and sometimes rare pieces of art, made their famous arrival. During that period many companies produced and marketed wax goods. However, it is generally agreed that the Clarke family of London, England introduced the "improved" candle light to the world. In 1844, a George Miller Clarke applied to the British Patent Office in London for a patent on a certain "improvement in night lights." The specification was numbered 10,029. In 1857, Samuel Clarke, another member of the family, received Patent No. 961 under the same classification.
During that time frame the Clarke name continues to appear on numerous patents for a variety of unique lamps and their reputation for fine craftsmanship grew. The addition of colorful glass and porcelain shades and cups expanded their sales. They also introduced brass, nickel and silver plated standards to hold the lamps. The fairy lamps registered by Clarke were sold under the names of "Pyramid", "Fairy", "Fairy Pyramid", "Wee Fairy", Burglar's Horror" and "Cricklite." All of these names were registered in the United States, as well as in Great Britain. The fairy lamps were commonly referred to as night lights and also vigil lights. Although none of these lamps was offered as a "votive light," many people used them on home alters before holy pictures. When Queen Victoria's Jubilee was celebrated in 1887, numerous souvenirs were placed on sale in her honor. Samuel Clarke designed a fairy lamp in the shape of a crown, which proved very popular.
The candle-burning fairy lamps were soon widely accepted because they proved to be safer and did not demand the continuous vigil required with oil-burning lamps. Clarke's advertisements for their fairy lamps emphasized the safety of their design. They also guaranteed the lamps to be free from the flickering which was an unacceptable characteristic of standard oil-burning lamps.
Samuel Clarke purchased his glass supplies from strongly established and highly respected businesses such as Worcester Royal Porcelain Company, Ltd., George Davidson & Company, Ltd., Stuart and Sons, Ltd., of the Red House Glass Works, Stourbridge and last but not least Thomas Webb & Sons, Ltd. who supplied shades and cups made of Queen's Burmese. These and other suppliers enhanced the image of Clarke fairy lamps. The fact that shades and bases were interchangeable gave each customer the liberty of purchasing a shade and base of their own choice, consequently fairy lamps did not necessarily originate with matching parts.
It is commonly accepted that Clarke had an agent and business in America that sold fairy lamps. Clarke had his own original trademark which incorporated a small fairy with a wand in the center of each base encircled by the words "Clarke Fairy Pyramid, Trade Mark." It is unknown why Samuel Clarke selected this trademark. The Phoenix Glass Works, of Pittsburgh, was granted the sole rights to manufacture under the Clarke patents for distribution in the United States. The company continued to be listed as a supplier of fairy lamps in New Jersey between 1887-1888. After this period, the name of Clarke disappears from all records but the business was continued under the firm name of F. W. Kralert & Company. Mr. Kralert was a native of Austria and in 1891 was listed as one of the prominent businessmen of Newark.
The firm of Hobbs, Brocunier & Company of Wheeling, West Virginia, established in 1861 manufactured fairy lamps labeled "Acorn Lamps." This factory was acquired by the United States Glass Company around 1891.
Burmese was created by Frederick Shirley of the Mt. Washington Glass Company, New Bedford, Massachusetts. In 1881 he combined a formula using uranium oxide (used in making yellow or custard glass) with gold (used as a coloring agent for ruby glass). The end result was a yellow or custard glass with edges that turned to a red blush when reheated. The new glass was named Burmese and was patented on December 15, 1885. The name Burmese itself is often attributed to Queen Victoria, who was said to have exclaimed that the rich tones reminded her of a Burmese sunset. However, the name was already in use by the time Frederick Shirley went to England with his royal offerings. Charles W. Goe, a Fenton Glass Company employee, recaptured the magic formula for Burmese in 1969 and Burmese entered the Fenton line in 1970. In 1978, Levay ordered Burmese Fairy Lights from the Fenton Glass Company. These were decorated with handpainted purple violets. The color code was BV.
William H. Barr of Steubenville, Ohio was granted a mechanical patent for the process of creating opalescent glassware, in 1888. It required the addition of calcium phosphate to the glass formula and then reheating the specific section of the article where the opalescent features were desired.
History of Fenton Art Glass Company
The Fenton Art Glass Company was founded in 1905 by Frank L. Fenton and his brother John W. Fenton in an old glass factory building in Martins Ferry, Ohio. They began by painting decorations on glass blanks made by other glass manufacturers. Soon, being unable to get the glass they needed, they decided to produce their own glass. The first glass from the new Fenton factory in Williamstown, West Virginia, was made on January 2, 1907.
Frank L. Fenton's desire to develop new and unusual colors helped to keep Fenton in the forefront of the handmade art glass industry. During the years from 1905 to the 1920's, Fenton design was heavily influenced by the artists at Tiffany and Steuben. In late 1907, Fenton introduced "Iridescent" glass. This glass, now known as "Carnival" glass, is a popular collectible today.
During the 1930's and 1940's, Fenton produced practical items, such as mixing bowls and tableware to get through the depression and WW II shortages. They continued working on developing a wide array of new colors. In the late 1940's, the top three members of the Fenton management team died, leaving Frank M. Fenton, age 33, and Wilmer C. (Bill) Fenton, age 25, to step in and take over as President and Vice President. In spite of other glass factories closing at a rapid rate, Frank and Bill led the Fenton factory through significant American growth for the next 30 years.
In 1986, the leadership of the company passed on to the third generation, with George W. Fenton, Frank M's son, taking over as President. Today twelve Fenton family members work together along with over 560 employees to create handmade glass artistry that is loved by collectors around the world. Fenton is known for its beautiful colors and patterns. Each piece of glass is an artistic creation by skilled glass workers and decorators.

The ware # 3608 Fairy Lamp was introduced in 1969, following' the charm of two piece Fairy Lamps so fashionable years ago. It is a two piece design, 4 1/4" tall, utilizing the very popular Hobnail pattern in both the chimney and base. The term, may have originated from the hobnails pioneer Americans wore on their shoes, is amazingly descriptive. The Hobnail pattern is formed by blowing or pressing the glass into a mold which has a series of carefully hand sculpted indentations. They become the raised part, or hobnails, in the finished piece. 1969 marked the 30th. Anniversary of the introduction of Hobnail to the Fenton line.
